Spring cleaning doesn’t have to feel like a marathon. Instead of tackling a full deep clean, focusing on a few key areas can make the biggest difference. With small, simple resets your home can feel lighter and ready for the new season - without taking over your entire weekend.

April often sits between seasons, depending on where you live in Canada. Winter is over, spring is officially here, but we’re still transitioning. A small reset makes sense for families looking to freshen up their homes. 

Rather than taking on the entire house at once, April is a good time for what Merry Maids franchise owner and residential cleaning expert, Ashley Wilson, calls a “semi-spring clean.” The idea is to focus on the areas that were hit by winter the most, so the home feels immediately tidier and enjoyable to live in, and less overwhelming to clean later.

Focusing on key spaces can give the biggest payoff for your effort. Below are some of the places we recommend you start: 

Living areas 

After being the main gathering spot all winter, living rooms can get crowded with toys, blankets, and piles of papers or magazines. Start by cleaning off tables and shelves, dusting surfaces, and vacuuming rugs and furniture. Then take a closer look at what’s left and put away or donate anything you no longer use. You can also try something small but satisfying, like rotating cushions, flipping rugs, or rearranging a shelf or coffee table to make the space feel a bit different and more organized. 

The Kitchen 

The kitchen gets used all the time, so it’s easy for crumbs and spills to build up around the sink and stove. Clean handles, knobs, and the fronts of appliances, as those are the surfaces you touch every day.  

Swap out old dish towels for clean ones, and add a small touch that makes the space feel brighter, like a jar of fresh herbs, a bowl of fruit, or a vase of fresh flowers. 

Even a simple hack like cleaning the microwave can make these highly-trafficked areas feel refreshed. For this you can add a few lemon slices to a microwave-safe bowl filled with water. Heat on high for 5 minutes, let stand for five minutes (this creates steam) and remove the bowl. From there you simply wipe the walls and base of the microwave down and it will look (and smell) brand new. 

Bathrooms 

Start with the surfaces you use the most: sinks, mirrors, and countertops. Wiping down  the faucet and showerhead to remove water spots can make the fixtures sparkle. Even reorganizing toiletries so only daily essentials are visible can make the space feel calmer and cleaner. Swap out towels and bath mats, and consider adding a small seasonal touch, like a new soap dispenser, a plant, or a candle. 

Choose One Area to Declutter 

Sometimes the best way to get started is with the area you’ve been avoiding the longest.  Maybe it’s a hallway closet, a desk drawer, or the top of the fridge. Focus on that one spot, sorting everything into a pile to keep, donate, or recycle. Finishing one area is a great way to gain momentum and makes it easier to tackle the rest without feeling overwhelmed. 

Remember, spring cleaning doesn’t have to happen all at once. We aren’t looking to spend hours on an oven deep-scrub or cleaning every baseboard in the house at this time.  Treating April as a transition period can help you approach cleaning in a way that feels realistic and approachable.  

By focusing on practical steps and high-impact areas, it becomes easier to move into spring with a home that feels lighter, more organized, and ready for the season ahead.
