The Better Alternative to Puddle Jumpers Is Here. And It’s Made in Canada.
What if your child’s floatie actually helped them learn to swim? Created by an experienced swim-school owner looking for a better way to teach, the Canadian-made Kaizen Kidz 3-2-1 Swim Pack gives children buoyancy while progressively helping them develop the skills and confidence to swim independently. The By The North team put it to the test, read our honest review at the end of this article.
For many parents, puddle jumpers and water wings are the difference between a child clinging nervously to them in the pool, and one that is happily splashing around. Puddle jumpers provide buoyancy and confidence, and a little breathing room for the grown-up standing nearby.
But did you know that most floaties actually put your child in what swim instructors call “the drowning position”?
Swim instructors and advocates have long raised concerns about what these popular flotation devices actually teach children in the water. The upright position that they keep your child in (keeping their head and body upright) is similar to an emergency flotation device. They’re meant to hold you up and keep you safe if you can’t swim, but for young ones just learning, this can provide them with a false sense of security and put them into the wrong swim position needed for learning.
The problem isn’t that parents have made the wrong choice. It’s that, until recently, they haven’t been given many choices at all.
For decades, families have had relatively few options: life jackets, water wings and puddle jumpers. Now, a Toronto dad and longtime swim-school owner has created an alternative. Kaizen’s 3-2-1 Swim Pack is designed to preserve a child’s confidence in the water while helping them build real swimming skills.
Why are swim instructors concerned about puddle jumpers?
Many traditional flotation products hold children upright rather than encouraging the horizontal position used for swimming.
Some swim instructors also worry that children can feel more capable in the water than they are without their floaties, and that parents can unintentionally develop a heightened sense of security while their children are wearing them.
“As a mom, I experienced this first hand when my daughter; thinking she still had her puddle jumper on, went back into the pool and down the shallow end steps not realizing she wouldn’t float as she had before. Luckily, we were right there, but that false sense of security is real.”
Traditional floaties don’t change as a child’s abilities improve. They provide the same level of support every time, without creating a natural path toward independence and true swimming skills.
Floaties serve their purpose, they solve an immediate and understandable problem: helping children stay buoyant, feel comfortable and enjoy being in the water. And now we have an option that provides buoyancy while also supporting skill development.
A swim aid that changes as your child learns.
Unlike a conventional floatie, the 3-2-1 Swim Pack was created specifically with progressive learning in mind.
The Swim Pack wraps around a child’s torso, with the buoyant foam positioned at the back. This encourages children to practise in a more natural swimming position while still providing the support they need to feel comfortable in the water.
Its defining feature is a series of removable foam layers. As a child becomes stronger and more confident, the layers can be removed one at a time, gradually reducing the amount of assistance provided.
Here’s how the progression works:
Three layers: The greatest level of support for children beginning to build their comfort and skills.
Two layers: Less buoyancy as the child becomes more capable in the water.
One layer: Minimal support as the child moves closer to swimming independently.
No Swim Pack: The ultimate goal: confident, independent swimming.
Instead of simply helping children float, the 3-2-1 Swim Pack is designed to help them gradually need less help floating.
Made for real swimming progress.
The Swim Pack’s progressive design gives parents and instructors the flexibility to meet children where they are.
A child who is nervous or new to the water can begin with greater support. As their kicks, body position, and overall confidence improve, a layer can be removed. There’s no abrupt jump from fully supported to swimming completely independently.
That gradual transition is what makes the product feel so different from conventional floaties: the goal isn’t continued reliance on the Swim Pack, it’s to eventually stop needing it.
It also allows children to enjoy the confidence that comes with additional buoyancy while practising the movements and positioning involved in learning to swim.
The pack also comes with video and written guidance on swim milestones and technique, so parents and instructors know how to support each stage rather than guessing.
We put it to the test.
The By The North team—three moms with preschool-aged kids—wanted to find out whether the Swim Pack worked as promised.
Would our kids feel comfortable wearing it? Would it keep them buoyant without holding them upright? And could we actually see how it might help them progress toward independent swimming?
Here’s what we found:
It’s super easy to put on (it just wraps around their torso and clips in).
Comfortable to wear! Unlike other floaties, their arms are free to move.
It puts your child immediately into the horizontal swim position.
It’s slightly less buoyant than water wings and when I let go of my preschooler, she immediately started kicking her legs and scooping her arms (like a doggy paddle). I was impressed!
As someone who often does use water wings (hi, nervous water mom here), I don’t think I’ll ever go back to them. Within MINUTES, I saw my preschooler progressing with how he was moving his body in the water. It’s like he suddenly understood needing to kick his legs and move his arms to stay afloat. I am so excited to continue using the Swim Pack and helping him to actually learn to swim, not just float with assistance.
Other floaties help to get children comfortable in the water, but the Swim Pack does that while also helping them to learn to swim. I highly recommend it to parents with young kids learning to swim!
