The Canadian Products You’ll Find In My Bathroom

Open my bathroom cabinet and you'll find Canada: from my makeup bag to the kids' bath time. These are the Canadian brands I actually use and keep buying, and the stories behind them that make me love them even more.

No filler, no gatekeeping. Here's what's on my shelf.

Cheekbone Beauty

Cheekbone is an Indigenous-owned makeup brand started by Jenn Harper, an Anishinaabe woman and member of Northwest Angle #33 First Nation. The idea came to her in a dream in 2015. Her mission is to help Indigenous youth see their value in the world, while making sustainable makeup that won't end up in a landfill. You may have seen her on Dragons' Den in 2019, where she turned down the offers. Cheekbone is now a certified B Corp and even sold at Sephora.

My favourites are their mascara and bronze/blush combo.

The 7 Virtues

Halifax's own clean perfume house was founded in 2010 by Barb Stegemann. Her motto is "Make Perfume, Not War." She started by buying orange blossom oil from farmers in Afghanistan, to support legal crops in places affected by conflict.

In 2011, she became the first woman from Atlantic Canada to land a deal on Dragons' Den. Today, The 7 Virtues is sold at Sephora worldwide, and you can design your own scent at its Perfume Atelier on the Halifax waterfront.

I love their Discovery Set to try new scents, change it up, and travel with!

BASMA

Founder Basma Hameed is a burn survivor who couldn't find a foundation that worked for her skin, so she made her own. She spent two decades as a scar camouflage specialist before launching BASMA in 2021.

Its Foundation Stick took over three years to develop and comes in 40 shades. Sephora picked up the brand for its Canadian stores, and it's now known for creamy, buildable formulas like its cream blush.

Seriously, Basma’s blush is my favourite!! It’s moisturizing and effortless, and you can build it up for the look you want.

Skinfix

Skinfix started with a healing balm created by a British pharmacist in the 1870s. After moving to Halifax, Amy Gordinier met the pharmacist's great-great-granddaughter, fell for the formula, and founded Skinfix in 2014.

The Halifax-based brand focuses on the skin barrier, with products for eczema, dryness and sensitive skin. Everything is fragrance-free and developed with dermatologists.

When I apply their peptide cream, it just feels like it’s really doing something. You only need a little and your skin feels moisturized. I saw they have this Fall Set and now I’m adding it to cart….

Routine Natural Deodorant

Routine was born when Calgary's Neige Blair became a new mom and couldn't find a natural deodorant that actually worked. After more than 30 test batches, she and her sister-in-law Pippa brought it to a local Calgary market in 2011.

It's still made in Calgary and is now sold in over 3,000 stores worldwide. Plus, the scent names are half the fun.

I will never change deodorants. Routine smells amazing, doesn’t make my armpits dry, and LASTS! My favourite is Lucy In The Sky.

Everist Shampoo Concentrate

Most shampoo is over 70% water. Toronto founders, Jayme Jenkins and Jessica Stevenson, asked why we ship all that water around when we already shower in it.

Their answer is a waterless shampoo paste in a recyclable aluminum tube. One small tube gives you 50+ washes, about the same as a regular 300 ml bottle. The shampoo concentrate is made in Toronto.

I love to bring this when travelling! Check it out.

Loot Toy Co. Bubble Whoosh

Bath time in our house means one thing: Loot. Their Bubble Whoosh is a powdered bubble bath: one heaped tablespoon makes a tub full of bubbles and super colourful water. Their Bath Squigglers (bath bombs) have a foam character inside and my kids can’t wait to see what comes out. They’re truly obsessed with them.

Loot started in Vancouver in 2016, and every product is still handmade there. The formulas are non-toxic and gentle on kids' skin (even those with eczema).
