5 Canadian Wines You Need To Drink This Summer
By Laura Batten, Specialist in Canadian Wine Tastings, Crushable Wine / Canadian Wine Tasting Experience Tickets, Multiple dates | Eventbrite
This just in: affordable and supremely delicious wines are produced right here in Canada. But you probably thought Canadian wine was overpriced or gross, didn't you?
As many historical figures have wisely stated — never let a good crisis go to waste — a multitude of Canadian wineries are now capitalizing on tariffs and bans on American products by beating the drum of patriotism, exposing locals to lesser-known regions, styles and brands they may have previously dismissed.
Here are 5 wines sure to become part of your patio and BBQ rotation.
2023 Liebling Sauvignon Blanc
2025 Battersea Mio Vineyard Marsanne
2020 Fogolar Hughes Riesling
Divergence MV Brut One
2024 Sempre Mio Marsanne
2023 Liebling Sauvignon Blanc
Price: $22
Founded and operated by the Oppenlander sisters, Jessica and Ali grew up in a generationally owned viticultural family responsible for farming hundreds of acres of vineyards in the Niagara region. As an homage to their Father and German heritage -- Liebling, meaning darling -- they launched the brand a few years ago producing some of their favourite varieties.
This wine is sure to turn you off your Kim Crawford addiction and keep your dollars local. This wine is juicy, fresh, and dangerously smashable. Multiple bottles likely required.
2025 Battersea Mio Vineyard Marsanne
Price: $22
Battersea was founded by long time Niagara wine professional Julie Enns. Because of her longstanding relationships with some of the best growers and winemakers in the region, Julie has access to high-quality fruit the average winery doesn't.
Don't let the price of this wine fool you — this 100% Marsanne comes from Mio Vineyard, highly sought after grapes some of Niagara's top vintners clamour for: Bachelder, Di Loro, Fogolar.
2020 Fogolar Hughes Riesling
Price: $19.95
A surefire way to know a wine will be top notch: specialize in only two varieties (Cabernet Franc and Riesling) and be a professor of oenology at Brock University.
Founder and winemaker, Marc Pistor, is widely known among the Canadian wine industry for his expertise in handling the often misunderstood and overlooked variety of Riesling. 2020 is widely lauded as the "vintage of the century" in Canada and at this price point, why wouldn't you want to try for yourself?
Divergence MV Brut One
Price: $33
I like to describe Divergence, and its founder, Jeff Moote, as the sleeper hit of Canadian wine. It's very much an if-you-know-you-know kind of brand.
Jeff found winemaking later in life, and as a trained engineer he's got an edge: precision. He approaches winemaking with an analytical lens I don't often encounter, perfect for making absolutely epic sparkling wine.
2024 Sempre Mio Marsanne
Price: $33
Corey and Lena Mio are both dreamers and doers: they set out to buy a farm and leave the city for good — and they actually did it.
Nearly a decade since purchasing their farm in Beamsville, they've become widely celebrated as one of Niagara's premier vineyards, and one of the few to plant and grow Marsanne, a rare and unique variety unlike anything else you'll taste from the area.
